Guilin's defining experience is the karst landscape — the vertical limestone peaks, the rivers, and the rice paddies that look exactly like a classical Chinese painting. The city's own hills are worth climbing, but the Li River cruise to Yangshuo is the essential journey. Budget at least two or three days to explore both the city and the countryside around it.
