Cizhou Ceramics Museum

The Cizhou Ceramics Museum in Ci County (Cixian), south of Handan, is dedicated to one of the most important northern Chinese ceramic traditions. Cizhou ware is characterised by its bold painted decoration — black or brown slips applied over a white ground, with images of plants, birds, figures, and calligraphy — and by its thoroughly functional character. These were not delicate objects for aristocratic display; they were storage jars, pillows, wine vessels, and everyday bowls made to be used.

The museum holds a well-curated collection spanning the Tang through Qing dynasties, with particular strength in Song and Jin dynasty pieces when the tradition was at its peak. The displays show both finished works and excavated kiln furniture — the saggers, stilts, and test pieces that illustrate how the ceramics were made.

Outside the museum, the surrounding area around Ci County still has active workshops producing work in the traditional style. Visiting the museum and then a working studio in the same afternoon gives a satisfying sense of continuity across eight centuries of craft.

A story
Cizhou ware was the pottery of ordinary people — functional, bold, and made in enormous quantities — while the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen produced refined porcelain for court use. The bold black-and-white painted decoration on Cizhou pieces influenced ceramic traditions across East Asia and, through export trade, reached as far as Japan and Southeast Asia, where the style was studied and imitated.
