Things to Do

Two very different kinds of heritage define Tangshan's visitor offer. The Earthquake Memorial Museum and ruins site is one of the most sobering places in China, a rigorous account of a disaster that the government first tried to conceal. The Kailuan National Mine Park presents a completely different kind of industrial history — the Victorian-era colliery that made the city, with underground tours and remarkable preserved machinery.

Both are substantial half-day visits. Together they fill a meaningful day in a city that does not usually appear on tourist itineraries but rewards the visit.
