The most significant day trip from Tangshan is the Eastern Qing Tombs in Zunhua County, about 60 kilometres to the northwest. The UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest imperial mausoleum complex in China, and the combination with Tangshan makes a logical itinerary: a morning at the earthquake memorial and Kailuan Mine Park in Tangshan, then an afternoon at the tombs, or a full day at each.
Tangshan also sits on the coastal route toward Qinhuangdao and the beach resorts at Beidaihe and the Great Wall terminus at Shanhaiguan, all accessible by high-speed train in under an hour.
