Wenfeng Pagoda

The Wenfeng Pagoda, originally named the Tianning Temple Pagoda, is a Song-dynasty tower near the centre of Anyang that provides a useful orientation point for the old city. Built during the Song or possibly the Five Dynasties period, the pagoda has an unusual profile — wide at the top and narrow at the base, the inverse of the more common tapering form — which gives it a distinctive silhouette visible from streets around it. The name "Wenfeng" means "literary peak," a reference to the Confucian tradition of placing literary pagodas in locations believed to improve a city's scholarly output.

The pagoda is decorated with carved images of Buddhist figures on each tier, weathered but still legible. Access to the interior allows climbing a few floors for views over the old city quarter, though the upper sections have been closed for safety. The surrounding streets retain some of the texture of older Anyang — small temples, traditional courtyard homes, tea shops — making it a reasonable starting point for a walk through the historic centre before heading to the major archaeological sites.
