Yuan Shikai Tomb

Grand tomb complex of Yuan Shikai, the general-president whose imperial ambitions helped define early Republican China.

Yuan Shikai's tomb in Anyang is a fittingly heavy monument to one of modern China's most complicated figures. Yuan was a late-Qing general, the first formal president of the Republic of China, and briefly a would-be emperor; his career sits right at the fracture between dynasty and republic.

The tomb complex mixes Chinese and Western-influenced funerary forms, which suits a man who moved between old power and new institutions. It is most rewarding if you know a little of the history before arriving. Combined with Yinxu and Anyang's other deep-historical sites, it shows that the city is not only about the Bronze Age.
