Shaoshan, Mao Zedong's birthplace village, is 60 kilometres southwest of Changsha and 30 minutes by high-speed train — an easy half-day for anyone interested in the Chairman's origins. The village includes the original family farmhouse and a large museum. Yueyang, on Dongting Lake to the north, has the Yueyang Tower and the lake scenery; 30 minutes by fast train. Changde, with its Poem Wall and Peach Flower Garden, is 90 minutes. Zhangjiajie is three hours by high-speed train — doable as a very long day trip but better as an overnight.
