Changsha is a city of layers: Republican-era history, communist revolutionary pilgrimage, extraordinary Han-dynasty archaeology, and a food and nightlife scene that operates at a pitch unusual for a provincial capital. The Hunan Provincial Museum alone justifies the trip. Orange Island, the Yuelu Academy, and the Tianxin Pavilion each add a different dimension. Allow at least three days to do the city properly.
