Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

The Avatar Hallelujah Mountain is a free-standing quartzite column in the Yuanjiajie area of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, rising about 150 metres with a slight lean and forested to its crown. It is most dramatically visible from the First Bridge of the World, a natural rock arch whose safety railings allow visitors to stand directly above the 300-metre drop while the column floats below. Multiple viewpoints around the Yuanjiajie plateau frame the column from different angles and distances.

The column is less imposing in isolation than the Yuanjiajie plateau as a whole — there are hundreds of equally dramatic formations visible from the same viewpoints. What makes it famous is the specific marketing alignment with Avatar and the resulting global recognisability. First-time visitors sometimes find the reality more modest than the photograph; those who arrive with realistic expectations typically find that the actual landscape exceeds it. The best light on the column is in early morning when mist fills the valley below and the column appears to float.

A story
The column was renamed in 2010 after James Cameron confirmed Zhangjiajie's influence on Avatar's floating Hallelujah Mountains. Its original name, Southern Sky Column (南天一柱), referred to the Taoist cosmological idea that certain peaks supported the sky at the corners of the world. The name change was not universally welcomed in China — some commentators objected to renaming a geological feature after a foreign film — but the park administration argued the rename had increased international tourism significantly and declined to reconsider.
