Lamadong Temple is the main Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in Chifeng city proper, a Gelug-school monastery that dates in its present form to the Qing dynasty. The main hall contains an oversized bronze Maitreya and a collection of tangka paintings that are not reproductions — they were made here and stayed here, which is more than can be said for many Inner Mongolian monasteries after the Cultural Revolution. A small community of monks still practices at the site, and the sound of morning chanting drifts out into the surrounding residential streets.
The temple is in the older section of Chifeng, within walking distance of the city's commercial streets. It does not receive large numbers of tourists, which means you are likely to have it largely to yourself outside of significant religious dates. The courtyard has a pleasant garden atmosphere, and the gate guardians flanking the entrance are fine examples of Qing-period Mongolian Buddhist iconography. No entry fee, though a donation box is present and used.
