Five Peaks Garden

Small Ming garden in Suzhou named for five Taihu-stone peaks in its rockery.

Five Peaks Garden, or Wufeng Garden, is one of Suzhou's smaller classical gardens, and that is exactly why it is worth knowing. It lacks the fame and crowds of the Humble Administrator's Garden or the Master of the Nets, but it still has the essential Suzhou grammar: water, pavilions, framed views, and a carefully composed rockery of Taihu stones.

The garden takes its name from five upright stone peaks, set like a miniature mountain range within the enclosure. It is a good stop if you have already seen the big-ticket gardens and want a quieter example of how much drama Suzhou gardeners could compress into a modest space.
