On a low hill northwest of the old town stands the Yunyan Pagoda, a seven-storey brick tower from the 10th century that leans noticeably — Suzhou's answer to Pisa, though rather less touristed. The pagoda has been stabilised and is no longer at risk of falling, but the lean is still visible and gives the whole site a slightly surreal quality. The wooded hill is pleasant to walk regardless.

A story
The hill is said to be the burial site of He Lu, King of Wu, who died in 496 BC. According to legend, a white tiger appeared on the hill three days after his burial to guard the tomb.
