Wuxi Museum

The Wuxi Museum occupies a large modern building in the eastern part of the city and holds the main civic collection of local history, art, and culture. The permanent galleries cover the city's commercial history (it was one of the four major rice-trading cities of imperial China), its silk and textile industries, and the development of the lake region. There are also rotating exhibitions of Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting.

The museum is free and air-conditioned — a useful combination in summer. The collection is genuinely informative for understanding why Wuxi grew wealthy and how that wealth was expressed in gardens and civic architecture. The galleries are mostly labelled in both Chinese and English, which is better than average for a city-level Chinese museum.
