The Bada Shanren Memorial Museum (八大山人纪念馆) occupies the Qingyunpu Taoist complex in southern Nanchang, where the painter Zhu Da lived and worked during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The monastery's traditional architecture — courtyards, covered walkways, lotus ponds, ancient plum trees — has been carefully restored and provides an appropriately contemplative setting for the paintings on display.
The collection includes original works and high-quality reproductions of Bada Shanren's most significant paintings. Even visitors unfamiliar with Chinese ink painting tend to find the work arresting: the compressed, spare compositions convey an emotional charge that needs no cultural context to feel. The museum is one of the genuine cultural highlights of Nanchang, and one of the least crowded. Take metro Line 1 to Qingyunpu station.
