Nanchang makes a good base for the region. Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake and an outstanding winter birdwatching destination, is about 80 kilometers north and easily reached by bus or car. Lushan, the ancient mountain resort with views over the Yangtze plain and a collection of colonial-era villas, is reachable in around two hours. Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital with excellent museums and active kilns, is about two and a half hours by high-speed train.
