When to Go

Nanchang has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit — temperatures are mild, humidity is manageable, and the landscape around the city is at its most pleasant. Spring brings the cherry blossoms at Qingshan Lake Park and flowering trees throughout the city's parks.

Summer (June to August) is hot and very humid, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. Nanchang is famously one of China's "furnace cities" — a designation it shares with Wuhan, Chongqing, and Nanjing — and the heat can make outdoor sightseeing genuinely uncomfortable in July and August. Winter (December to February) is cool and occasionally cold, with some rain; the city doesn't see snow most years but temperatures can drop below 5°C. Winter is the best season for day trips to Poyang Lake to see the migratory cranes.
