The Gan River (赣江) runs through the center of Nanchang and its east bank promenade is the city's most important public space. The walkway stretches several kilometers along the river, connecting the Pavilion of Prince Teng to the south with the commercial waterfront developments to the north. In the evenings it becomes a continuous stream of walkers, joggers, cyclists, and families with strollers, illuminated by the light display projected onto the west-bank towers of Honggutan.
The river itself is broad and unhurried here, and the scale of the view — wide water, the glittering city behind you, the planned towers ahead — captures something important about what Nanchang is doing with its available geography. Occasional boat services run tourist cruises on summer evenings. The promenade is the single best place to spend an evening in the city.
