Jiangxi Provincial Museum

The Jiangxi Provincial Museum (江西省博物馆) in Honggutan is the largest and best-equipped museum in the province, with a collection that spans natural history, archaeology, and fine arts. The ceramic collection is the strongest section — Jiangxi is the birthplace of Chinese porcelain, and the museum's holdings from Jingdezhen kilns across multiple dynasties provide an authoritative survey. The gallery covering the Haihun Hou (Marquis of Haihun) archaeological site, a Han-dynasty tomb excavated near Nanchang in 2015, is outstanding: the tomb contained gold coins, lacquerware, and inscribed bamboo slips in extraordinary preservation.

The museum relocated to its current purpose-built facility in Honggutan in recent years. The building is large and well designed, and the exhibits are organized logically with good English labeling in the major galleries. Allow at least two hours for the full collection. Entry is free with passport registration.
