The cluster of universities in the western part of Nanchang generates the kind of bar and café district common to Chinese university neighborhoods: dense, inexpensive, open late, and only loosely organized around a central street. The areas around Nanchang University and Jiangxi Normal University have the highest concentration of student-oriented venues — cheap draft beer, board game cafes, late-night hotpot restaurants, and karaoke rooms for small groups.
These neighborhoods are worth visiting if you want to see how a Chinese provincial city's young adult population spends its evenings. Prices are noticeably lower than the more tourist-facing venues in central Donghu. Most English speakers you'll encounter in the city are likely to be students in these neighborhoods.
