Wugongshan National Geopark

Wugongshan National Geopark (武功山国家地质公园) occupies a ridge of mountains along the border between Jiangxi and Hunan, with the main scenic area accessible from Pingxiang. The signature feature is the summit meadow landscape: broad, rolling grasslands at elevations between 1,600 and 1,900 meters, sitting above the cloud layer on clear days and offering panoramic views across the mountain ranges of western Jiangxi. This high-altitude meadow environment is unusual for subtropical China and gives the park a visual character more associated with Scotland or New Zealand than with the typical forested Chinese mountain.

The park has become one of the premier tent camping destinations in Jiangxi and Hunan, with thousands of campers arriving on weekends in summer and autumn. The main trail system connects the entrance village of Longshan to the summit ridge in about four to six hours of hiking, passing waterfalls, ancient Taoist altar ruins, and increasing numbers of spectacular rock outcrops. The descent to the opposite side leads through old-growth forest. Gear rental and guided services are available at the trailhead village.

A story
Wugongshan's summit ridge holds the remains of dozens of ancient Taoist altars, some dating back over a thousand years, scattered among the highland meadows at elevations above 1,900 meters. The combination of open grassland, sea of clouds, and ancient stone ritual structures found nowhere else in Jiangxi creates an atmosphere unlike any other mountain in the province — and explains why the place attracted religious communities who apparently preferred isolation above the cloud line to the more accessible mountain monasteries of the lowlands.
