Sanqingshan — one of Jiangxi's UNESCO World Heritage landscapes — is accessible from Shangrao. The mountain is about 90 kilometers north of the city center by expressway, with buses and hired cars making the journey in around 1.5 hours. The main entrance to the Sanqingshan scenic area is served by cable cars that eliminate most of the altitude gain and place visitors directly on the high ridge trail network. Shangrao is the most convenient overnight base for a Sanqingshan visit if you don't want to stay at the mountain hotels.
The mountain is known for its spectacular granite peaks, Taoist temples, and sea of clouds formations. The combination of geological drama and religious architecture on the high ridges has few equals in Jiangxi.
