Shangrao Concentration Camp Memorial

The Shangrao Concentration Camp Memorial (上饶集中营旧址) preserves several surviving buildings from a wartime detention facility operated by the Nationalist Kuomintang government at a site near Shangrao between 1941 and 1942. The camp held hundreds of left-leaning political prisoners, many of whom died in custody. The memorial includes a museum with documentary exhibits and a park containing the preserved detention barracks.

The site is one of the less-known chapters of China's wartime history and attracts primarily domestic visitors on patriotic education tours. The exhibits are largely in Chinese, but the physical setting — the actual buildings where prisoners were held — communicates effectively regardless of language. Entry is free.

A story
The Shangrao Concentration Camp operated from 1941 to 1942 under the Nationalist government, imprisoning Communist Party members and left-leaning intellectuals captured during the period of nominal Nationalist-Communist alliance against Japan. Among the prisoners was Fang Zhimin, the Communist leader of the Jiangxi-Zhejiang base area, who had been captured in 1935. The camp's existence complicates the official narrative of unified Chinese resistance to Japan — something the memorial's exhibits address with more directness than many comparable sites.
