Changchun World Sculpture Park

The Changchun World Sculpture Park contains several hundred outdoor sculptures by artists from over 60 countries, arranged around a central lake and garden landscape. The collection was assembled through the Changchun World Sculpture Conference, an international event that the city has hosted repeatedly since the mid-1990s.

The quality is uneven, as is inevitable with any large open-air collection built through conference and invitation rather than curatorial selection. But the best pieces are genuinely interesting, and the scale of the park means that walking between them is a pleasant afternoon's activity in good weather — the lake path, the garden sections, and the sheer variety of styles and materials make it more engaging than descriptions suggest. It is better than it sounds, which is the best recommendation.

Entry is free, which removes any pressure to justify your visit. Bring a camera and take your time with the pieces that catch your eye rather than trying to see everything.

A story
The park grew out of Changchun's ambition to position itself as a world city during the economic growth of the 1990s and 2000s. The city commissioned works from artists across dozens of countries and gathered them in a single space — a cultural project that was at least partly civic boosterism, but resulted in a genuinely varied collection that includes some pieces of real quality alongside the more conventional.
