Getting Around

Changchun has a metro system covering the main arteries, with lines connecting the city centre to the university areas, the suburban parks, and the main commercial districts. The metro is clean, reliable, and cheap — the most practical way to cover distance in the city. Taxis are plentiful and driven by the meter in the city centre, with app-based ride-hailing (Didi) operating extensively.

Walking is viable in the central areas around People's Square, the Manchukuo sites, and the university district — these are compact enough for pedestrian exploration and the city's street plan is relatively legible. Jingyuetan and the more distant parks require either metro or taxi; the forest park is large enough that a bicycle rental from the entrance makes good sense.

The city is well-organised and comfortable to navigate without Chinese language skills in the central areas, where English signage appears on the metro system and in the main tourist sites.
