Jilin University Campus

Jilin University is one of China's major research universities and one of the largest by enrollment. The main campus in Changchun occupies a significant area of the city and incorporates several former Manchukuo government buildings — distinctive colonial-era structures that sit alongside the tower blocks and modern facilities of a post-1949 university.

The campus is worth a walk for anyone interested in the architectural layers of Changchun's history. The older buildings — solid, formal, built to impress — stand in visible contrast with the utilitarian construction that surrounds them, and the juxtaposition is itself a small history lesson. The university has a museum of natural history on campus that is open to the public and holds geological and paleontological collections of reasonable quality.

As with most Chinese university campuses, a student ID or basic registration at the gate is usually required for entry. The formalities are generally minimal.

A story
Jilin University expanded massively in the 1990s and 2000s and is now one of the largest universities in China by enrolled student population — at peak enrollment it claimed over 70,000 students. The main campus is built partly around Manchukuo-era government buildings that were repurposed after 1949, giving it an architecture that combines Chinese socialist construction with Japanese neoclassical colonial structures from three different decades.
