A 1998 concert hall by Jean-Marie Charpentier on the north side of People's Square, combining a distinctive curved roof with a glass front face. The Grand Theatre is Shanghai's most important venue for classical music, opera, and ballet — the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, visiting international orchestras, and opera productions from the Met and Covent Garden all perform here.
Tickets are available through the box office and online; prices are lower than equivalent seats in European or American concert halls. The building itself — one of the more architecturally confident examples of 1990s Chinese public architecture — is visible from across the square. Box office opens one hour before performances; same-day tickets are sometimes available for sold-out shows at student standby prices.
