Food Street (Nanshi Shipin Jie)

Three-storey enclosed food mall styled as old Tianjin, with regional dishes from across China

Food Street is an enclosed three-storey mall in Nankai District built to look like a Qing-dynasty street, and it delivers exactly what it promises: hundreds of food stalls and small restaurants under one roof, serving Tianjin specialties alongside regional dishes from across China. The atmosphere is noisy, lively, and unapologetically commercial, but the food is reliable and the range is excellent.

Essential stops: Goubuli Baozi (the city's famous pork buns), jianbing guozi (savoury breakfast crêpes), mahua (twisted fried dough sticks), and ear-hole fried cake (ErDuoYan ZhaGao — sticky rice cakes fried and filled with red bean paste). It's a particularly good option for families or groups where everyone wants something different. Prices are reasonable by any standard. Go hungry.
