When to Go

Tianjin has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable times to visit — warm days, low humidity, and clear skies. Spring can be dusty from sandstorms blowing in from Mongolia, but this usually clears by late April.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly above 35°C and occasional heavy rain. Winters are cold and dry, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing and occasional snow. If you are visiting Beijing and considering a day trip to Tianjin, spring and autumn give the best conditions for walking the concession districts.

The Chinese New Year period (late January–February) shuts many businesses but the city is festive and lively. The Mazu Birthday Festival on the 23rd day of the third lunar month (April or May) brings traditional performances to Ancient Culture Street and the Tianhou Temple.
