Hai River Waterfront

Rebuilt riverside promenade lined with European concession buildings and lit-up bridges

The Hai River flows through central Tianjin and its banks have been transformed into one of the most pleasant walking areas in the city. The riverside promenade stretches several kilometres through the old concession districts, passing beneath ornate bridges and alongside restored colonial-era buildings that now house restaurants, bars, and hotels.

At night the river is the best place to see Tianjin's somewhat theatrical self-presentation: bridges lit in coloured LEDs, the Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel glowing above the Yongle Bridge, and the glassy towers of the financial district reflected in the water. River cruises operate from several points and offer a different angle on the city's architectural mix. The walk from Tianjin station south through the old British and French concession areas and past the Italian Concession takes about 90 minutes at an easy pace.
