Ramoche Temple

The second-holiest temple in Lhasa, sister shrine to the Jokhang

Ramoche is the quieter sister of the Jokhang, half a kilometre north and a great deal less visited. It was built at the same time, in the 7th century, to house the Jowo Mikyo Dorje — a Buddha image brought to Tibet from Nepal as the dowry of King Songtsen Gampo's Nepalese queen, while the Jokhang's Jowo Shakyamuni came from China with his Chinese queen. The two images were swapped between the temples in the 8th century and the smaller image has lived at Ramoche ever since.

The current temple is largely a Qing-dynasty reconstruction; the original was sacked during the Cultural Revolution and the Jowo Mikyo Dorje was broken in half, the halves later recovered separately and rejoined. The atmosphere inside is darker and more intimate than the Jokhang — fewer pilgrims, more silence, the same heavy smell of butter lamps. A worthwhile stop for anyone with time beyond the headline sights.
