Shigatse makes a reasonable base for day trips into the surrounding Tsang region. The most popular are to Gyantse to the east, where the Kumbum Stupa and Gyantse Dzong justify the journey in their own right. Shalu Monastery and Narthang Monastery, both within 25 kilometres of the city, are good half-day excursions that can be combined. All require a hired vehicle or bicycle.
