National Martyrs' Cemetery

The National Martyrs' Cemetery in Tengchong commemorates Chinese soldiers killed during the Second World War, especially in the fighting to retake western Yunnan from Japanese forces. China has few national cemeteries dedicated so specifically to wartime dead, which gives this one unusual weight.

The grounds are solemn rather than showy. Visit it together with Tengchong's other war-history sites if you want to understand why this border town matters in modern Chinese memory.
