Tengchong offers a genuinely unusual combination: volcanic geology, geothermal hot springs, a preserved ancient trading town, and one of the most thoughtfully presented World War II memorials in China. None of these overlap with what you find elsewhere in Yunnan, which makes the long journey to reach the city worthwhile.
