Getting There

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport handles direct flights from most Chinese cities and connections to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, and a growing list of international destinations. The airport is 30 kilometres southeast of the city centre; taxi or Didi to the lake area takes 45 minutes to an hour. An airport shuttle bus serves several city centre stops.

High-speed rail is the best way to arrive from Shanghai: trains from Shanghai Hongqiao run every 20 minutes, take under an hour, and cost around 75 RMB. Trains from Beijing take 4–5 hours on the high-speed line. Hangzhou has two main stations — Hangzhou East handles most high-speed services; Hangzhou Station (the old station) is closer to the lake. From Hangzhou East, metro Line 1 connects to the lake area in 30 minutes.
