When to Go

Spring (March–May) is the finest season for Hangzhou. The Longjing tea harvest begins in early April, the lake is ringed with cherry blossom and peach flowers, and the weather is mild before the summer humidity arrives. Autumn (October–November) is the second choice: cooler air, osmanthus in bloom across the city, and the spectacular Qiantang River tidal bore in September–October on the highest lunar tides.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 38°C. The lake is crowded with Chinese tourists and the hillside trails can be sweaty work. Winter is quiet and sometimes cold enough for snow on the surrounding hills, which creates genuinely beautiful views across West Lake — locals call it one of the classic Ten Scenes. The plum trees on Lone Hill bloom in late February. Golden Week holidays in early October and early May bring the worst crowds; avoid these weeks if you can.
