Zhejiang Provincial Museum

The Zhejiang Provincial Museum occupies a series of traditional buildings on Lone Hill island in the northern part of West Lake — the island that gives West Lake its most photogenic winter view when snow dusts the plum trees. The collection spans 7,000 years of Zhejiang history: Neolithic jade from the Liangzhu culture (among the oldest jade objects in China), Song dynasty ceramics from the Longquan kilns, and a strong collection of bronzes and paintings.

The Liangzhu jade is genuinely extraordinary — these ritual objects predate the Shang dynasty by a thousand years and were only recognised as a distinct civilisation in the 20th century. The museum is free and usually quiet, a welcome contrast to the crowded temple sites. The Lone Hill setting adds a walk along the Baidi Causeway to the visit.
