One of the more reliable tavernas in Laiki Ytonia, Mattheos has been serving straightforward Cypriot food in a pleasant courtyard setting for many years. The menu is what you expect: meze plates of grilled halloumi, taramasalata, tahini, and hummus to start, followed by grilled meats, souvla (rotisserie lamb or pork), and kleftiko (slow-roasted lamb in a sealed clay pot). The kleftiko needs advance ordering but is worth it. Portions are generous, wine is Cypriot, prices are honest. A good choice if you want to eat well without fuss in the old city.
