Famagusta Gate

Restored Venetian gate in Nicosia's walls, now used as a cultural venue and old-city landmark

Famagusta Gate is the most substantial of the old gates in Nicosia's Venetian walls, built in the 16th century on the road that led east toward Famagusta. Its heavy stone passage and vaulted interior make the city walls feel less like a line on the map and more like a working piece of military architecture.

The restored gate also works as a cultural venue, which suits Nicosia well: old fortifications reused rather than frozen. Visit it while walking the walls and the eastern side of the old city, where the capital feels quieter and more lived-in than around Ledra Street.
