Kanteshwar Temple (Neelakantheswara Temple)

The Kanteshwar Temple, also known as the Neelakantheswara Temple, is a 10th-to-12th century Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Neelakantheswara (the blue-throated one). The temple features carved stone panels typical of the Kakatiya and early Deccan temple traditions, with detailed figural work on the exterior walls.

The temple is an active place of worship and draws considerable numbers of pilgrims, particularly during Mahashivaratri. The surrounding area is one of the quieter parts of Nizamabad and a pleasant contrast to the busy commercial districts around Gandhi Chowk.

A story
The Neelakantheswara (or Kanteshwar) temple is mentioned in inscriptions dating to the Kakatiya period, around the 12th to 14th centuries. The name Kanteshwar — Shiva as lord of the throat — refers to the blue-throated form of Shiva who consumed the poison that arose from the churning of the cosmic ocean, sacrificing himself to save the universe.
