Nizamabad Fort, also known as Nizamabad Quilla, occupies a rocky hilltop on the western edge of the city. The fortification was originally built by the Rashtrakutas in the early 10th century and later expanded by the Bahmani Sultanate and the Nizams of Hyderabad, leaving a structure with elements from very different architectural periods. The walls, bastions, gateways, and inner structures are partially in ruins but still impressive in scale.
The fort is the primary historical sight in Nizamabad and worth the visit for the views over the city and surrounding countryside as much as for the fort itself. Inside the walls are the remains of a mosque and a small Hindu temple, reflecting the mixed history of occupation. The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is generally accessible during daylight hours.
