Nizamabad is a mid-sized city in the northern part of Telangana (formerly Andhra Pradesh), about 150 km northwest of Hyderabad. It is a market town at heart, known for its turmeric production — the surrounding region is one of the largest turmeric-growing areas in India, and the spice market here is colourful and worth visiting.
The city's main historical attraction is Nizamabad Fort, a hilltop fortification originally built by the Rashtrakutas and later expanded by the Bahmani Sultanate and the Nizam rulers. The fort is partially in ruins but offers good views over the town and surrounding countryside. The Kanteshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, features fine carvings from the Kakatiya period. The District Archaeological Museum holds sculptures and artefacts from the region's layered history. The turmeric market is most vivid during the January-to-April harvest season. Ashok Sagar lake on the edge of town is a popular spot for an evening walk.
Nizamabad is well connected by rail and road to Hyderabad, with regular trains and buses making the journey in three to four hours. The city is not a major tourist destination, but it serves as a base for exploring the northern Telangana countryside, including the Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary about 80 km to the northeast and the historical town of Bodhan nearby.
