Bhadrakali Temple

The Bhadrakali Temple sits on a hill above Bhadrakali Lake on the northern edge of Warangal, a powerful Shakti goddess shrine that predates the Kakatiya dynasty and served as the tutelary deity of the Kakatiya kings. The presiding deity is Bhadrakali — a fierce form of the goddess Durga — depicted with eighteen arms, each holding a weapon.

The temple is one of the more active religious sites in Warangal, busy with pilgrims throughout the year and especially during Navaratri. The hilltop position gives good views over the city and the lake below. The lake itself is a pleasant spot with migratory birds in winter. The combination of the religious site, the lakeside setting, and the views makes this a good stop when arriving from or departing for Hyderabad, since it sits near the road connecting the two cities.

A story
The Bhadrakali Temple is built on a rocky outcrop above a lake, and the image of the goddess inside — holding eighteen weapons, one in each arm — is said to have been brought here by the Chalukyas in the 7th century, predating the Kakatiya dynasty by 500 years. The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the network of sacred goddess sites spread across the Indian subcontinent.
