The Gujarat Vidhan Sabha — the state legislative assembly building — is one of the better examples of post-independence Indian institutional architecture. Designed in the 1970s as part of the planned capital project, the building is imposing without being monumental, set within grounds that maintain the tree-lined character of the rest of the city's official sector. It is not generally open to visitors, but the facade and setting are visible from the surrounding roads.
The building sits at the heart of the government sector of Gandhinagar, surrounded by the various ministry offices that make up the administrative apparatus of Gujarat state. The planned symmetry of this area — wide avenues, large setbacks, everything exactly as the 1960s planners drew it — is most apparent here.
