Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park

Indroda Nature Park is officially called the Dinosaur and Fossil Park, and the fossils are the genuine reason to come. The late Cretaceous nesting site within the park is one of only a handful in the world, and the displayed specimens — including a large titanosaur skeleton and several egg-in-situ displays — are worth the trip from Ahmedabad even without the park's other attractions. The museum building is modest but the exhibits are well labelled.

Beyond the fossil museum, the park includes a zoo, a botanical garden, and a section of protected forest along the Sabarmati river. The zoo is a pleasant afternoon's walk rather than a major attraction. The botanical garden is large and well maintained. The whole complex is rarely crowded and makes for a relaxed visit. It is closed on Mondays.

A story
Palaeontologists have found more than a thousand dinosaur eggs at Indroda — one of the largest dinosaur nesting sites ever discovered. The eggs belong to the sauropod titanosaur group and date from the late Cretaceous period, around 65–70 million years ago. The site was identified in the 1980s, and excavations are still ongoing; some egg fossils are displayed exactly where they were found, embedded in the original rock.
