Sannihit Sarovar

Sacred tank where seven underground Saraswati rivers are said to meet

A smaller but equally sacred tank a short walk from Brahma Sarovar, Sannihit Sarovar is believed to be the confluence point of seven underground streams of the Saraswati river, the sacred river described in the Vedas that disappeared beneath the earth. Bathing here on the new moon (amavasya) and on solar eclipses is considered especially meritorious, and pilgrims come from across India on those days.

The ghats are lined with temples and dharamshalas, and the tank has a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than the larger Brahma Sarovar — particularly on non-festival days, when it is a peaceful place to sit and watch daily devotional life: an old priest performing aarti alone at the waterside, pilgrims making pradakshina (circumambulation), families arriving with offerings. The contrast between the two tanks repays visiting both.
