Solang Valley

Open valley north of Manali offering paragliding, zorbing, and winter skiing

Solang Valley lies about 14 kilometres north of Manali on the road towards Rohtang Pass, a wide open glacial valley flanked by snowy peaks. It draws two different crowds: in winter (January to March), skiers and snow-tourists come for the modest ski slopes and snowmobiling; in summer, it becomes an adventure sports centre with paragliding, zorbing, and cable car rides.

The valley floor offers easy walking through meadows with good mountain views, and a chairlift (gondola) runs part of the way up the valley wall. It is easily combined with a trip towards Rohtang Pass. During peak tourist season (May, June, and October), the valley can be very crowded with Indian tourists, and the commercial activity near the base competes with the scenery. Arriving early or visiting on a weekday improves the experience considerably.

A story
In winter, Solang Valley gets enough reliable snow that it was developed as a ski slope in the 1980s. The skiing is not technically demanding — gentle nursery slopes by Alpine standards — but it introduced thousands of Indian visitors to the sport. In summer, the valley transforms into an adventure-activity hub where the main offering is paragliding from the slopes above.
