The Mata Kuan Rani — Princess of the Well — is a small temple on the bank of the Beas a kilometre upstream from the centre of Mandi. The legend behind it concerns a princess of the old Mandi royal house who, faced with capture by an invading army, leapt into a well rather than be taken; her spirit became the protective devi of the well and the temple was built over the spot.
The temple itself is modest: a single sikhara-roofed shrine with a brass-bound door and the well at its base. Local women come to bathe and to make offerings, and the temple is rarely thronged with outsiders. It pairs naturally with a walk along the riverbank from the Victoria Bridge or with a stop on the way out to Rewalsar.
