The Raj Mahal — the "royal palace" — was the seat of the ruling Sen dynasty of Mandi from the 17th century until the merger of the princely state with the Indian Union in 1948. The original palace was a substantial four-storey complex with carved wooden balconies, painted halls and underground passages connecting the royal quarters to the river. Most of it has fallen down or been demolished, and what remains has been partially converted into a heritage hotel.
You can walk through the surviving courtyards and the painted main hall if you ask at the reception. The hotel restaurant is one of the few formal places to eat in central Mandi; the long terrace at the rear faces the Beas and is a good spot for a coffee while you decide on the next temple.
