Victoria Bridge

Colonial-era suspension bridge over the Beas

The Victoria Bridge is the green-painted suspension footbridge that links the old town of Mandi to the south-bank settlements of Purani Mandi. It is no longer the main vehicle crossing but remains in use by foot traffic, and the rattle of the iron-plate deck as you cross is one of the small distinctive sounds of the town.

The bridge is the obvious landmark for the temple trail: cross north-to-south to reach Trilokinath, then walk back along the riverbank to Panchvaktra at the confluence. Midstream, the view downstream takes in the river curving past the Raj Mahal ruins and the eighty-one temples that gave Mandi its nickname.

A story
The Victoria Bridge was completed in 1877 by Raja Vijay Sen of Mandi, who modelled it on a smaller version of London's Lambeth Bridge after a visit to England — at the time the only suspension bridge in the Himalayan region. The original deck has been replaced but the iron-chain suspension and the masonry pylons are still those that Vijay Sen built.
