Kokernag

Kokernag is a botanical garden laid out around the biggest natural spring source in the Kashmir Valley, about 23 km southeast of Anantnag. The garden is a mix of flower beds, lawns, terraces, and chenar trees, with the spring itself emerging through several outlets into a shallow pool.

There is a small trout hatchery on site — Kashmir trout fishing was introduced under the British and survives in the cold streams of the area. Allow an hour or two for the gardens, and combine the trip with Verinag, which lies further south on the same road.

A story
The spring at Kokernag is the largest in the Kashmir Valley and is said to emerge in the shape of a chicken's foot — hence the name (kokur meaning chicken in Kashmiri). The water is reputed to aid digestion, and locals have used it medicinally for centuries.
